In 2005, GlaxoSmithKline and the American Lung Association launched a US campaign to raise asthma awareness, based on the Asthma Control Test™ (ACT),
a survey developed by QualityMetric Health Outcomes Solutions. Within 3 months into the launch of their campaign, over 130,000 people had responded.
More than 25,000 had called their 800 #, and of the 100,000 unique visits to the ACT web site, nearly half of the respondents had poorly controlled asthma.
Based on its success in the US, GlaxoSmithKline and the American Lung Association plan to launch this same campaign globally.
Pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies have increasingly engaged in providing health information directly to potential consumers in addition to physicians.
Direct-to-consumer (DTC) information comes in many forms – from marketing/advertising to outreach/educational campaigns like GlaxoSmithKline conducts with the ACT.
To be most effective, patient-reported outcomes (PRO) surveys used in DTC campaigns must meet scientific standards of reliability and validity, and have demonstrated
acceptance and relevance among consumers and clinicians. The ACT and QualityMetric's other disease-specific surveys offer the same precision and scientific validity as
our market leading SF™ Generic Health Surveys and are used for:
| Education |
- Educate consumers and clinicians about medical conditions, their symptoms and effects, and potential treatment options
|
| Screening |
- Promptly recognize or detect personal health problems that may benefit from clinical consultation
- Identify consumers/patients with unmet needs – finding the "needle in a haystack"
- Measure the "burden" of the disease in select populations
|
| Treatment |
- Improve evidence-based decision-making for the clinician
- Improve patient-provider interaction
- Promote self-care and compliance with treatment regimens
|
| Monitoring |
- Determine if the disease is under control through re-administration of the survey

QualityMetric understands that in the world of therapeutic development, evaluation, and marketing, the cost and timing of PRO data collection can be limiting factors.
This is why we developed DYNHA® – the first computerized adaptive health assessment system that is faster, smarter, and, in many cases,
more affordable than fixed-length PRO survey administration. QualityMetric first introduced DYNHA in 1998 at a Medical Outcomes Trust conference in Boston.
It was introduced again in 1999 to an international audience in Barcelona with the DYNHA Headache Impact™ Test, one of the first uses of PRO surveys in DTC marketing.
Generic
QualityMetric's SF-36®, SF-36v2™, SF-12®, and SF-12v2™ Health Surveys are recognized as leading generic PRO measures for use in clinical trials.
Their reliability and validity in assessing the burden of disease and the effects of treatment have been demonstrated in over 60 different conditions.
They have been linguistically adapted in up to 70 languages.
Disease-specific
QualityMetric disease-specific PRO surveys can be used alone to screen for and monitor impact of disease on functional status and well-being.
They can also be paired with an SF™ Generic Health Survey to capture a more comprehensive picture of the health status benefits resulting from treatment.
Modes of Administration
In addition to paper and pencil survey administration, many QualityMetric surveys are available for online, fax/scanning, PDA or IVR administration,
offering accurate data capture and scoring, real-time patient reports, and aggregate-level data with interpretative guidelines.
QualityMetric's Outcomes Insight Consulting Division has collaborated with clinical, outcomes, pharmacoeconomics, product development, and marketing professionals,
supporting the development and application of PRO measurement throughout the clinical trial process. From development of a disease-specific PRO survey or designing protocols,
to presentation before an FDA panel on clinical trial results, our consultants provide broad-based support and expertise involving the use and application of any
scientifically valid generic or disease-specific PRO survey.
